NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL

I I GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE. The General Purposes Committee of il tiie A T ow Plymouth Thorough Council met last night, there being present: His [. Worship the Mnvov (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Crs. W. A. Collis W. F. Short, ]<\ J. Hill, , A. S. Brooker, li. L. Parkin, H. V. S. j Griffiths, and J. W. Hayilen. .1 five taxi car proprietors petitioned the council to have the present stand for ears changed from Currie Street to the north side of Devon Street, from the Bank of New Zealand coiner to Egmont Street. The borough inspector reported on the matter, admitting there were disadvantages and dangers in the present stand, ' but recommending that if a change was made the stand be from the A.M.P. corner to the White Hart Hotel. He pointed out that the stands were all recently conpidered and advertised at consider- • able expense. It was decided to decline the request. The Harbor (Board wrote asking the council to erect two street lights between the tram terminus and the near end of the wharf. The electrical engineer reported that the cost of two lights of 100 candlepower each would toe £24, the lighting in that locality being on what is known as the series principle and more costly to instal than the ordinary street lights. There would be a difficulty in the matter. as the property is under the control of the Railway Department, whose permission would have to be secured to cross the lines, and that of the Harbor "card to erect the lights. It was decided to instal the lights, provided the Harbor Board pav £lO per annum towards maintenance of the same. The Eastbourne Borough Council wrote asking the council to support a resolution to the effect that the Definition of Time Bill, as introduced by Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P., should be placed on the ■Statute Book without further delay.— The council approved the principle and decided to snnport the resolution. The application of the town clerk for extra assistance in his office was referred to the Finance Committee
