MANGAHAO HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.
| PROGRESS OF THE WORK. Palmeraton North, Sept, 23. In commotion with the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme, up to the present contracts have been let for the formation of a road to the top A of the :idge leading to the Mangahao dam. The distance approximates Ave miles. Of this, portion has been completed and the rest is well under way. At present 43 men are employed, independent of the engineering staff. Contracts for the remainder of the road to the dam in-the Mangahao Valley are ready to be let. A second permanent camp is being erected, and 80 more men are to start on the balance of the road work. The winter season in the mountains led to considerable loss of time, and the carting has considerably damaged the road alreadyexisting between the Manawatu Plain and the Tokomaru Valley. This constitutes the whole of the work actually done on the undertaking. A considerable amount of preparation work has been done by the engineering staff. Contracts have been let for "the supply of a steam-driven electrical plant for working air compressors for driving tun. nels, but the plant has to come from England, it being impossible to procure it in the Dominion or in Australia. Further steps are being taken to immedi. ately saw the (timber required for the housing and frames on the ground adjoining the Mangahao dam, and this will soon be on the way.
