LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. > Wellington, Last Night. The Legfslative Council met at 2.30. The Kauri Gum Industry Amendment Bill, and Auckland 'University College Site Bill were read a first time. The debate upon the motion to commit the Board of Trade Bill was continued by Sir Waiter Buchanan, who supported the Bill and warned members against the operations of the meat trust, and said the Bill was necessary to combat them. Hon. W. J. Geddes characterised the Bill as a clever piece o! political camouflage, or death-bed repentance, with im* ' portant reservation. Hon. Hall-Jones said the increased powers proposed to be given to the Boar 4 of Trade were needed urgently. Hon. Sir P. Bell, in reply, defended the Board of Trade against the suggestion that it had been asleep, and reminded members what had been done regarding bread, butter, sugar, kerosene, and rent. It was outrageous to talk of political camouflage. The Bill was then committed and was reported with minor amendments. The Council rose at 5.20.
