EDUCATION BOARDS' CONFERENCE.
MINISTER'S OPENING ADDRESS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The conference "of education boards was opened this afternoon under the presi. dency of Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman oi the Wellington Education Board. After the delegates had bean accorded a civic welcome, Sir Francis Bell, Minister of Education, addressed them. He said the Government had to provide first for the absolute needs of education They would certainly have more demauds than the money would fuliil, ami they would have to try to make a fair distribution, but it was absolutely certain, to his mind, they would fail to satisfy everybody. Whatever their degree of satisfaction, he hoped they would give the Government credit for trying to be just. The Director of Education also addressed the delegates briefly. The conference passed a resolution expressing its opinion that the national system of free, secular, and compulsory education should be maintained. The conference adjourned until Friday.
