The New Plymouth Repatriation Committee is experiencing difficulty in finding openings for men wishing to take up farm work. One would think that there are plenty of openings of this kind for steady and willing men, and that farmers would be only too glad of the opportunity to utilise their services and at the same time teach them the work, especially when the Department offers a liberal subsidy. We are asked to bring the matter to the attention of farmer:-, and to solicit their help in training likely and approved men.
A welcome home to a native soldier in the Masterton district the other night terminated somewhat unexpectedly (says the Wairarapa Age ) The guest of the evening became uncontrollable, and it was found necessary to telephone for the pulice. When a constable arrived. he found that an armistice had been declared. The excited soldier had been chased around a paddock, and eventually threw up his hands and surrendered.
The leaders of the Labor party have furnished to the war men who were physical as well as moral heroes, but we have not heard that the extreme Socialist faction has troubled to offer honor or congratulation to, one of them. .Some of them have died in the service of their country. The late Mr E. J. Carey was a notable example of our argument. He gave up a good position, hastening to the front, notwithstanding that lie was beyond the age-limit, and he died nobly with his face to the niy. The extreme Socialists maiie no attempt to do honor to his memory. Nevertheless, he was a man truly representative of Labor, who had rendered great services to the cause of the working classes, and who surrendered life itself on the altar of his country. Carey was the type of hero that the working man is proud of. Webb is the type of hero who claims to be proud of tiie working man.—Wellington Times.
