THE STEEL WORKERS' STRIKE. ORE NOT TO BE HANDLED. By Telegraph Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Sept. 24, 12.20 a.m. New York, Sept. 23. A telegram from Chicago states it is reported that the marine workers on the ore carrying vessels on the Great Lakes have decided to refuse to handle ore destined for the steel factories involved in the strike. At Newcastle, Pennsylvania, seven persons were shot, including two women, in the steel strike riot.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. VARYING ESTIMATES AS TO STRIKERS. Received Sept. 23, 10.25 p.m. New York, Sept. 22. At Pittsburg, secretary Foster, of the Steclworkers' Union, asserted that 279,100 workers struck on the first day. The employers assert that less than a third of this number walked out. Insurance companies estimate that, owing to rioting, insurance rates in some of the steel districts have trebled.—• Aus. N.Z.
