PERSONAL.

Dr. E. A, Walker was a passenger for Auckland by the Karawa last night. Mr. C. F. H. Pollock was appointed secretary of the Hawke's Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday.

Mrs. F. J. Aldons has received advice that her husband, Private F. J. Aldons, is returning by the lonic, due at Wellington shortly. Mr. A. L. Williams, for some time a war correspondent in Russia, was a passenger by the Tninui from London, which arrived on Sunday. Sir Walter Buchanan, who has been on a visit to England, was a passenger by the Corinthic. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes and Mrs, Rhodes were also passengers by the Corinthic, A London cable states that Messers F. E. Wilson and F. C. Bone, from Hawera, who have been on a visit to England since May la3t, hope to be returning to New Zealand in October. Admiral Jellicoe was welcomed at Auckland yesterday by the chairman of the Harbor Board, who presented him with a handsome souvenir book containing an address and water-color sketches of the harbor. Subsequently a civic reception was held at the Town Hall.

Mr E. L. Egarr, of the staff of the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court office has been notified of his transfer to the Stratford court office, and expects to take up his duties there on October 1. Mr Ronald H. Quilliam, of the firm of Govett, Quilliam and Hutchen, New Plymouth, has been appointed revising bar--ister for the district of Taranaki, under the Building Societies Act, 1908.

The death has occurred at Motueka of an old and respected resident, Mr. John T. Rumbold, aged seventy years. The deceased was well known in the country districts, where he traded for many years as a draper and outfitter. He was at one time in business in Nelson. A widow and family of two sons are left.

In regard to the loss of Sergeant Joseph off the Tainui, it appears that he jumped overboard. The vessel put back on her course, but, although a search was made for Joseph, he was never seen again. His young wife was accompanying him to New Zealand. A subscription jimong all on board resulted in a sum of £BO being collected for deceased's widow. The annual report of the Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association, Masterton. shows a profit for the year of 02,090. The directors recommend a dividend of S per cent, free of income tax, bonuses to shareholders and employees, and n rebate of 15 per cent, on stock commissions.

The Rev. J. M. Steward was on Sunday consecrated Bishop of Melanesia at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral (the Dominion re. ports). The ceremony was conducted by Bishop Sprott (Wellington), Bishop Julius (Christehurch), and Bishop Averill Auckland). Bishop Steward graduated at Magdalen College, Oxford. From there he went to Ely Theological College, and in 1902 he joined the Melanesian Mission, coming out to Norfolk Island on tho mission ship the Southern Cross' maiden voyage from England. During the whole of his seventeen years with the mission he Wits at the Solomon Islands. He has hr.d charge of the heathen island of Guadnleannr and the Christian island of Florida. Latterly his work has been at the college for natives at Maravove.

The Chronicle records the passing of another of Wanganui's old settlers in the person of Mr. John Lindsay. He arrived in Wunganui in the early sixties and settled at Fordell in the employment of Reed and Hume, of Fordell Farm. Later he went into the employment of the late Mr. J. A. "' ;niett, at Oneida. Mr. Lindsay, or "Little Jack" as he was best known to his many friends, was a man of sterling character and honorable dealing. Many old settlers of Wanganui and district will retain kindly recollections of the deceased gentleman, Although full of years, to the last he retained a characteristic fondness for the company of young people, and many of the younger generation will miss the kindly word and greeting extended to them at all times.

A civic reception was tendered yesterday to Captain L. W. Andrew, V.C., of Wanganui, who returned by the Corinthic. A hearty welcome was also given Briga-dier-Generals Melville and Young. Eulogistic speeches wero delivered by the. Mayor (Mr. Luke), Mr. Massey, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir James Allen, and Mr Veitch, M.P. Captain Andrew and Generals Melville and Young replied suitably. The exploit for which Captain Andrew was awarded the Victoria Cross was officially recorded in the London Gazette as follows: —"For most conspicuous bravery when in charge of a small party in an attack on the enemy's position. His objective was a machinegun post, which had been located in an isolated building. On leading his men forward he encountered unexpectedly a small machine-gun post which was holding up the advance of another company; he immediately attacked, capturing the machine-gun and killing several of the crew. He thencontinued the attack on the machine-gun post which had been his original objective. He displayed great skill and determination in his disposition, finally capturing the post, killing several of the enemy, and putting the remainder to flight. His conduct throughout was unexampled for cool daring, initiative, and fine leadership, and his magnificent example was a great stimulant to his comrades."
