The Juries Act Amendment Bill passed its final stages. The Hon. McGregor's Crimes Amendment Bill, to substitute presentment by the Crown law officers for the grand jury system, was defeated on the second reading. The Mortgages Extension Bill was read a second time. The Council adjourned till Tuesday. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. REPLIES TO QUESTIONS. The House met at 2.30. Replying to Mr. Veitch, the Premier said he had not had the opportunity of reading the Workers' Accommodation Bill. Ho, however, would do so, and later on say whether he would be able to take it up and give it the hacking of the Government. Replying to Mr, Semple, the Minister for Mines said he could not agree to take up the Mining Amendment Bill or the Coal Mines Amendment Bill introduced by him (Mr. Semple). An hon. member: Could the Minister, however, take steps to have his: amendments put into the Government Bills when they are before the GcJdfields Committee? If the committee endorsed them the Government would no doubt accept them. Replying to Mr. F. Smith (Waimarino), the Minister for Finance said if the whole of the" Liberty Loan was not subscribed by Sept. 24th. he probably would extend the time of application for a fortnight. In that event the date of allotment would also probably he ?x----tended. Leave was granted to introduce the following Bills, which were read a first tim#: Trustees Amendment Bill (Mr. Brown), Grey town Borough Loan Empowering Bill (Mr. Hornby). BOARD OF TRADE BILL. The House went into committee on the Board of Trade Bill. On Clause 1, a lengthy discussion ensued, most of the speeches being on the second reading lines, and was unfinished at the supper adjournment. Mr. Semple, in clause 0, moved to reduce from five to three years the term of the members of the Board of Trade. This was lost on a division by 57 votes to 7. The clauses relating to fines and imprisonment were passed unaltered. An addition was made to a sub-clause | providing for special provision for prevention of profiteering. On the motion of Mr. Massey, it was decided that no prosecution shall he instituted under this section except with the consent of the Board of Trade. The Bill was reported as amended, toad a third time and passed. The House rose at 11.40.
