Mr. D. J. Hughes announces his candidature for the Egmont seat, as Mr. Wilkinson is not seeking re-election. Mr. R. Trouland, of the local gooih oftice, left yesterday morning on his annual vacation. He intends visiting his relations at Greymouth. Mrs, Lapraik, wife of Major G. Lapraid, N.CM.C., died at Thames on Monday. She was a daughter of Mr. Bush, formerly warden of Thames. Frank G. Cotter, who for the past 18 years has been clerk in the Canterbury Jockey Club's office, has been appointed acting-secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, in succession to Mr. Wanklyn.—Press Association. Mr. John Young, of Otakeho, where he was practically born and bred, is leaving to take up his residence in the Auckland district, and on Thursday evening he was given a farewell by residents of the Plains, and presented with a cigarette case and holder, suitably inscribed. Mr. J. D. Hay, who has occupied a responsible position in the Lands Olfice in Dunedin for several years, has been promoted to the position of Chief Clerk of the Taranaki. Land. Board. During Mr. Hay's residence in Dunedin he has performed excellent services in the capacity of secretary of the Public Service Association (Otago branch). It is rumored (the Wellington Post states), that Lieut.-Colonel G. Mitchell, D.5.0., will be a candidate for one of the Wellington seats at the general election. He is now general organiser of the Wellington Military District for the Returned Soldiers' Association, and returned from active service some three months ago. He also saw service in the Boer War. He was with the Main Body on Gallipoli, where he was severely wounded. Unable for a timj, for physical reasons, to go to France, lie spent a period in England in training parties, and then had a long and successful career on the western front.
