Taranaki mileh cattle are much in favor in the Waikato and Thames district, and during the past few weeks quite a number of herds, mostly springing heifers, have been driven right through. Mary Sweeney failed to put in an appearance at the Magistrate's Court yesterday when called to answer a charge of using obscene language of a particularly objectionable character on September 4 in the vicinity of the Public Library. Sub-Inspector Hutton asked that as it was an indictable offence, and she was entitled to be tried by a jury a warrant should be issued for her arrest. He said it was not the first time defendant had refused to obey a summons, on a previous occasion being apprehended at Hawera. The Magistrate (Mr T. A. B. Baile.v) agreed to issue the warrant. Later in the day accused was brought before the magistrate, when evidence as to the particular occurrence was given by Ella M. King and Lilian Grace Bishop. Accused was very much upset and complained that people "cheeked" her without any provocation, though she admitted the two complainants had not given her "cheek," The magistrate admitted the matter was a somewhat difficult one to deal with, and he sentenced accused to 14 days' Imprisonment.
