STRATFORD.

The Plunket Society intend holding a "Plunket Day" on Saturday. A tent, in which-there will be stalls'for the sale of sweets, provisions, and flowers, has been kindly lent by Mr. T. Lamason. Surprise packets are to be sold, and in one of these it is stated a £5 note will be placed, and in another a valuable ring. It is expected that the public will liberally support the society's eilori. Un all the money raised a Government subsidy oan be claimed.
Last week, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. McMillan) waited upon the General Manager of Railways in reference to the p jst 'office site. Mr. McVilly is now Jiavtig plans prepared for the extension of the railway yards and buildings, and these will not be completed for a month. The .plans are to provide for the requirements of Stratford, so Mr. MeVillv savs, for the next fifty years. When they are completed, Mr. McVilly will visit Stratford and place the Mayor in possessor of the information that the residents have been waiting for so long. The question of having a large honrdii-.u', lately erected for advertising purposes at the entrance to the railway station, removed was also mentioned by the Mayor, and the General Manager promised to look into that matter on h>s visit to the town
The deputation which waited on the Minister with a view to having the road to the East Mountain House metalled met with a good reception, and from v * Minister's statement there is every likelihood that the w irk will be authorised. The Mayor, and Messrs. Kirkwood and Richards interviewed the Minister n;i Public Works and suggested that, owing to the unfavorable conditions existing for employees on the Stratford end of the Main Trunk line, higher wages should be paid and the condition* as far as possible improved. The Minister apparently, had quite made up his mind on the matter before seeing the deputation and was quite unmoved b,' their arguments. He refused to differentiate and pay higher wages at one placa than were being paid in another. An elderly man named John Murray, who resided at Kohura.tqjii, was mi' mitted to tlio Stmtfovil hospital «>u Tuesday in a eritieal condition. He was suffering from wounds self-inflicted with a razor. A total of ,-£]o2 5s 9d has been collected in Stratford and Toko for the Nurses' Memorial Fund. Mr. F. H Masters, secretary to the fund, is remiuing the tmmt to Walliaatw, but
as the promoters of the fund wouH like to reach £2OO, anyone willing to contribute, and who have not yet done so is requested to send in the donation at once. At; a nfeeting of directors, held after the annual meeting of the Ngaere Dairy Company on Tuesday, Mr. \V. Morrison was re-elected chairmail. A welcome home social will be given at the Tuna School to Private H. W. Hancock on Friday evening. What will give more pleasure to the family than Father's photograph?
