It only cost 60(10 guineas at the recent sale of the Swynford stud. A Prince Paiatalne colt and a San Toy filiy brought 5000 guineas. Tho aggregate of the sales Has £223,000 averaging £971, both records. TOOK DEFEAT BADLY. RACING CLUB PBESIDEKT. After the result of the election for the presidency and treasurership of the Napier Park Racing Club was announced at the annual meeting of that body the other day, Mr J Vigor Brown, MP., thanked the members for returning him to the position. Mr. V. Q. Smith, the unsuccessful candidate, then had something to say. He wished to protest, he said, against one man hoklinii positions for all time. He believed in nations going round. At present tbe .Vupier Park Club was one of the most consoriatlvd and "one-horse shows" in Now Zealand. The secretary was also a paid servant of the president. The chairman declared that he must pntect the secretary. Mr. Smith was speaking againsi a man who could not reply. He was no "sport" to do that. Mr. Smith continued that the last auditor to the club was also auditor to M:. Vigor Brown. ~ Returning to Mr. Vigor Brown, Mr. BraiUi stated: "Wo have been friends com. rades in arms—at arm's length—(tauijhtiT). It would hare been a proud day had he defeated Mr. Brown, and no doubt Mr. Brawn would have felt the position had. he been beaten." Mr. Vigor Brown, In replying, said he wr.s very sorry to see that Mr. Smith was so tbitiskinned, and could not take a beating without crying over It. The chairman went on to say that members had voted as they thought fit, and he was very sorry Mr. Smith had taken bis "licking" in such a way. Mr. Smith, In reply, made a further attacs on the chairman, exclaiming: "He holds al' the positions—Mayor. Member of Parliament, and, why, ha even got into the Harbor Boairl on a third-class ticket 1" "A thick-skinned Ethiopian—the last of his race," was what Mr. Smith termed Mr. Brown.
Mr. Brown drew Mr. Smith's attention to the fact that tho Hon. E. Mltchclson had been president and treasurer of the Airtkland Racing Club for 34 years, and Mr .). B. Harcourt had been president of the Wellington Racing Club lor 20 yenrs.
