SUCCESSFUL SALVAGE SERVICE.
SHIPS RAISED FROM THE DEEP. By Telegraph.—P.'ess A3sn.~Copyright. London, Sept. 12. Vickers and Co. has successfully inaugurated a ship salvage device which utilises an airbag. The idea of the patent cuiisists of specially treated canvas and a flexible superstructure whereby the bags are enabled to resist great pressure during inflation under water. It is believed that many submarined vessels can be raised. Canvas bags, each lifting 100 tons, have already been used, and it is expected that bags lifting 500 tons will shortly be utilised. If there was a battery of 80 bags the biggest ship could be refloated. Vickers and Co. successfully raised the steamer Main, which was submarined off the Scottish coast by the means of two bags.
