THE BLENHEIM FLOOD. By Teiegraph.—Press Association. Blenheim, Yesterday. The heavy rain continued last night, and the Gmaka river topped its banks, with the result that some overflow water' came into the town, those jarts lying on the northern side being flooded. The railway line between Blenheim and Picton in many places is under water. The substantial banking works built by the River Board are holding wonderfully, and it is not anticipated that any serious break in the river bank will take place. The rain has now abated somewhat, and the indications point to the subsidence of the waters. A DESERTER SENTENCED. Palmerston N., Yesterday. Roydon Lee, who failed to report for medical examination, was found guilty by a court-martial and sentenced to 28 days' hard labor. TONGARIRO PARK. Wellington, Yesterday. A representative, deputation waited on Mr. Nosworthy, Minister of the Tourist Department, to press upon him the need for the opening up and development of the Tongariro National Park, by extending the area to incline the Kittctahi spring country. The deputation urged that a. hermitage and cottages should be erected, alio a hoard of control set up. The Minister promised support. He recognised the importance of securing scenic reserves, but ho did not at present favor a board, for he considered direct control by the department preferable. The whole matter depended upon the funds made available. DONATION TO THE ROSS HOME. Dunedin, Last Night. Miss Christina Clarke has donated, on behalf of her late brother. Daniel Clarke, £IOOO, the cost of five rooms in the Ross Home for aged people. ALLEGED GAMBLING. Dunedin, Last Night. Eighteen watersiders, who were charged with being found in a common gam-ing-house, appeared before the court again this mornin.!.'. Two of their number were further charged with using the waterside workers' rooms as a common gaming-house. The cases were remanded till the 26th. FALSE PRETENCES. Dunedin, Last Night. At the police court, Henara Parata, who was charged on two informations with obtaining money by false protences, was sentenced to twelve months' reformative treatment on one charge, and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on the second charge. AN INTERESTING DECISION. Whakatane, Last Night. An interesting decision, arising out of house shortage, was given by Mr. Kenrick, S.M., against an owner who required possession for two workmen. He refused an ejectment order against the tenant, who was not in arrears, and whose wife Was in delicate health, because another cottage belonging to the same owner was available whose tenant owed three months' rent.
