WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Wairtara, Sept. 9. At a special meeting of the Harbor Board, held on Friday last, a motion was carried that Mr. Laing be appointed wharfinger, secretary, and pilot at a salary of £2OB, with free residence. The chairman's action in appointing Mr. L. H. Sampson as temporary secretary was confirmed. The social got up by the Fire Brigade and held in the Clifton Hall, to help a comrade in distress, was very successful, £3l 12s being realised and handed over. The memorial gates social, got up by the Young Ladies' Guild was fairly well attended, and should realise a nice sum for the gates. Mr. J. Taylor provided the music, and Mr. S. D. George and P. Proctor were M'sC. The first junior football championship has been won by Waitara for the first time on record ,and is the result of strenuous work on the part of the forwards, clever handling of the ball by the backs, and good place kicking, and reflects great credit upon the team and the coach (Mr. G. Marshall), who was a tower of strength in keeping the team together; The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held last night. The headmaster reported that the school was having the spring holidays, and that the attendance for the past month was better than it had been previously. There was very little business to bo done, and the passing of accounts concluded the meeting.
