DESPERATE SOLDIERS AT FERMOY. SHOPS AND STORES WRECKED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 9, As the sequel to the motorists' outrage at Fermoy, 250 soldiers ran amok for upwards of an hour. They wrecked and looted shops, but ultimately the military authorities calmed the men. The Star's Dublin correspondent states that during the disturbances at Fermoy the terrified inhabitants barricaded their houses. The soldiers sacked grocers' and jewellers' shops, houses, stores, and several adjacent premises, looting without reservation. The soldiers handed out bundles of drapery, boots, and other goods to their comrades. Many women assisted in the destruction and plunder. Eventually a, small military picket with fixed bayonets arrived,- and the buglers sounded the "Fall in". The rioters answered the summons, and order was restored.—Aur.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CAUSE OF THE RIOT. Received Sept. 10, 7.40 p.m. London, Sept. 9. The soldiers' riot at Fermoy was due to the jury refusing to bring in a verdict of murder in the case of the soldier killed on Sunday.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Association.
