HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING, The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. C. D. Sole (chairman), R. McK. Morison, Hancock, • O'Neill, and Finnerty. i After a discission in committee, the | chairman moved and Air. Kinnerty seconded, that tho Whangamomona *Medical Association be informed that so far no reply had been received from the Department in reference to the appointment of a medical man for Wlmugamomona, but in the event of a satisfactory reply being received the Board! would immediately proceed to call for applications for medik-al practitioners for the position—Carried. The plans and specifications for additions to the hospital and Nurses' Home, and for a hot water heating service were adopted.
lhe Wellington Board wrote asking for support to a proposed amendment of the Widows' Pensions' Act, providing tor separate and distinct amounts for the widow and the children. It was thought that the amount for the widow should not be leas on . e 'h'M los, and for each subsequent child 10s. In regard to the conditions it was considered that all moneys received by widows from Benefit Societies or as compensation under the Workers' Compensation Act should be treated as property, not as income; also that the exemption ior persunal earnings should lie fixed at £2OO instead of £IOO. It was also thought that widows though without children should be eligible ior a pension. It was decided to support the' proposal. j
Dr. Leatham wrote stating that he hoped to let, the Board have a full report and estimate of the approximate cost of an X-ray installation that week. ■ The clerk stated that he had since learned that the estimate was £550, and it was suggested by Dr. Leatham that the Board should cable immediately to England for a quotation.—The chairman i-aid that the estimate did not "exceed their expectations. It would cost another £l3O to provide space for tho installation. There would be no difficulty in obtaining the required amount. The Board was asked bv the Department for its views on the'proposal that sisters and nurses should be trained to administer anaesthetics.—The chairman said the idea was a good one. Their own matron was quite capable of administering anaeschetics.—The letter was received.
The Medical Superintendent reported that during the month 21 patients were admitted, 2o discharged, and 12 remained in the institution at the end of the month. There had been no deaths, and ,rix operations had been performed under anaesthetic. There was only one patient in isolation. The number of soldier out patients attendances were f3.—Adopted. The Health Officer reported that foT the month two cases of diphtheria (one from the borough and one from the Stratford county) had been removed to the hospital. Four eases of influenza had been notified, death resulting in one case.—Adopted.
BOTiOUGH COUNCIL. The Borough Council met as a General Purposes Committee on Monday evening. The Health Oflieer (Mr. Grav) wrote expressing the hope that the Council .vould do as other Borough Councils and Town Boards in Taranaki had done and have a special clean-up week—un tne motion of the Mayor, the matter was referred to the Works Committee for a report on wava and means.
The General Manager for Railways wrote stating thot he could not comply with the Council's request to order the removal of ihe hoarding on the railway reserve.—The Mayor said he would interview the Minister when in Wellington.
_ A request of the Automobile Association that the approaches to all bridges be painted white was referred to the committee set up to prepare uniform by-laws for the province, A request was received from ten ratepayers in Miranda Street north that the Council would form a path on the west side of the street between Seyton Street and Pembroke Road. The request was supported by a deputation consisting of Messrs. H- E. Lawrence, E. S. Rutherfurd, and J. Weston.—On the motion of Cr. Lawson the, engineer -was instructed to bring down a report with an estimate of the cost for the October meet-
A number of ratepayers and- residents in Ariel Street north petitioned the Council for improvements to the street Between Seyton and I'embroke Road. — Referred to the Works: Committee for a report.
The electrical engineer (Mr. Hollands) reported that the plant at the Diesel station was running well.—Received. The Borough engineer reported on work done.—Received. The Works Committee recommended that the inspector be instructed to take the necessary steps to have motor cars left standing in Fonton Street, between Broadway and Miranda Streets placed in such a position that ample room will be left to ordinary traffic.—Adopted. The Electric Lighting Committee recommended ordering 50 poles.—Adopted. The General Committee recommended that the work of erecting additional shelves in the Public Library be proceeded with. The town band had ceased to exist, and Mr. Bnrmoster had sent in a balance-sheet showing the assets up .to July 31 to be £250, while there were no liabilities. The assets included 22 instruments, of which 13 were in the possession of the Council and the remainder Mr. Burmestor hail promised to have handed in.—The Mayor, in reply to Cr. Jackson, said he would hove something done in connection with the band shortly. The Town Clerk reported that all the reserves offered for lease by aurtion, were sold. I
Cr. Jackson was appointed a delegate to the Universal Saturday Half-holiday Conference to be held in Stratford on September 25. The librarian reported as to books issued and returned. The subscriptions received amounted to £7 lis.
The Borough Inspector reported that Ihe Town Hall had been let upon four occasions during the month, and that 14 head of cattle had been taken off the streets.—Adopted. The amounts expended on the Peace Celebrations in Stratford was £509 3s 7d. Subscriptions totalling £lsl 9s were received, the Borough Council contributed £ll4 10s 3d, and the Government subsidy amounted to £243 4s 4d. 1 GENERAL. Mr. J. W. McMillan (Mayor) and Mr. P.
