THE BUTTER PRODUCERS.

A PLEA FOR FAIR TREATMENT.

(By Wire.—Own Correspondent.)

Wellington, Last Night. Mr. S. G. Smith referred in the House to-night to the equalisation fund. He said that when the matter was discussed some daya ago there was a difference of opinion as to whether the producers agreed to the equalisation fund or whether the arrangement was, in a sense, forced upon them. He suggested that that phase of the matter should not be taken into account. The position to-day wa9 that 24,000 butter producers were being specially penalised in order that the people of the Dominion might, have cheap butter, and he urged the Government to give the producers' requests early and favorable consideration. Mr. Smith made an appeal for increased payments to superannuated railwaymen. He said the present rates of pension were entirely inadequate.
