MARTON NOTES. (By "Moturoa.") The Marlon course Is alwavs fairly damn In the sprinij, and on Wednesday there was . ■ittle more moisture than usual hanging about After the first race the slate of"the going on the rails was very heavy, while on the outside of the track there was slush at all times AH the winners came up on the centre of trio track, and at least two races were thrown away through jockeys not using their heads but persisting in ploughing through the very muddiest parts of the straight. Under the circumstances nothing but mishaps could he expected in the steeplechase events, and the double In front of the stand was a particular cause of trouble, the ground all round l>ein B nothing hut a treacherous morass. As if to mock the wretched track conditions, the sun shone out brilliantly, and it was a Derfcct summer's afternoon. The curtailed railway service militated against the attendance, but n large number ot sports motored through from all parts of iaranaki, and from Wangangui, l'almerston, and as far south as Wellington. The ratine was fairly interesting throughout the day, but indifferent horsemanship made the form a poor guide to future possible winners Practically all the leading flat riders attended the gathering, but tlie almost wholesale scratching of the top-weights forced the majority of the crack horsemen io view tlio racing'from the stand. h. G. Morris was the only rider to score more than one win, and. much of ills success was due to his knowledge of the intricacies of tile Marlon course

vl'l" "I* 111 , 0 J* 2 "", wc " whc " the >' selected lankee Jaak for the Hurdles. Tho dozen runners had not gone far before Master Boris was flattering his supporters, with Papanul and lankcc. .laek lvl»e 'next. Along the back Master Boris and Papanul were well clear and at the second fence from homo Papunui jumped to the front. Papanul looked all over a winner at tho turn, but Yankee Jack had him beaten at the distance, and coming oa under a strong pull, caught the judge's eye .1 bare head in front of Combustion, who came with a late run and almost won. Pan.inul was a fair third, aiul Wapping, Itlo, and Veto (who carried nibs, over) came next. The winner s performance was a good olio, but both along tbe back and in the straight A. McDonald displayed too much confidence for the nerves of tho backors of the favorite ltio was very sore, and shirked a, running out .fiht / i"°v 'V' I '-, Vilcuum w ' lß ™'<» siglited, and Ngakanul also shaped badly The withdrawal of .Sir Fanciful, Black Ma-fc Kuddy and several lessor lights reduced the field for tbe Bellevue Handicap to eleven, J.gmont Park (L. Morris) and Nursing Sister carrying the bulk of Iho coin. Tempo was first out, but was steadied, and Nursing Sister opened tip a good break o» Egmont Park Tempo and Beloved. Hgmoul Park joined Mirslng Sister before turning for home, and tho pair had a royal set to in tho run to the post. Egmont Tark's condition stood him in the severe duel, and he went awav from the three-year-old in tho last few strides. Tempo who was badly ridden, was running on well' in third place, just in .front of Beloved Farce and Toddy. Egmont Park's performance bora' out the Idea that he was very unlucky to get beaten at Waverley. He is a rattling good sort, and will win more races. Nothing but Stetson would go down with backers, but tbe public was not kept long In suspense. The double in front of the stand saw the ton runners in a frightful mil up Deeslde slipped, swerved and fell, and stct son landed on top of him, while Nctlsche and Aurike were pushed outside the second 'lencc, and took no further part In the race This left Onipoto in front, and the big Frisco gelding cleared out from the opposition "oing along the back. Coming into the straight McDonald steered Onipoto inside a flag, and ho was called off at the judge's box. This left Patarlkl and Argo together, with Papatere and Mac tolling in the rear The leaders cut each others throats in the run to the home bend, and Papatere, who was rapidlv closing up, fell at the second last fence. ' Patarlki had too much foot for \rgo, who Hied to nothing, leaving the former to win bv a big margin Argo jAt struggled on long enough to get second moifty, a length in front of Mac It was a sorry exhibition of slcepleehasing but the wretched state of tho course excused everything but the poor horsemanship displayed.

Volo, All Over, Tiranga, Rose Queen and Trombone were withdrawn from the Marten Handicai). and a spirited belting rare saw the jaded looking Speaker a trifle better favorite than the local Onialui. The latter looked trained to the minute. Penury liose took up the running from a Rood start and led Zola, The Speaker, Oinahu, and a bunched lot past the stand. There was no diaiiKe alone the back, but approaching Hie last bend the favorites closed up. Oinahu came out in the middle of the course, and (iiilcklv pul tho lssuo beyond doubt, though Penury* Rose struggled on gamely in the mud. Zola wis a close third, and Arrowilehl (>nd Tho Speaker wero right up nest. Itoliur was one of (lie last to finish, and While Ranger was another to cut up badly in the heavy going. Gang Awa' was the only scratching in the Victory Steeplechase, anc the field were somewhat evenly backed, though Master Webster and Want had a. slight pull over the others First Line and Mattock were always in front ' Willi Kurapai and Mailer Webster'next Cornelian ran off at the first fence, and Want fell at the second. Sensitive came,a cropper later on. Matlock, who was jumping very bitsettled down in the last mile, and gaining ground at every fence, drew awav from Kirst Line and won very easily. Kurapai was a bad third, and Master Webster, who was not bustled over Ihc last six furlongs was (he only other to finish. The winner's 'debut over country was mosl em-em-aging. ami alihnui'h in bis ninth year Matlock should siill have a (rood race left in hint Trior In the' meet- | ing he schooled nicely at Marton. and the touts were (Uiitc prepared to see him run a big race. ' Black Mark, fiiiyeluin. Trentham Rose and Gold Problem were absentees from Hie Railway Handicap, but ten went, to the post Probably Oratress and All Over owed their favoritism to n lot of outside money being planked on the machine The race requires liitle description, as Swrel Corn dashed off in front and wan never headed Ermine and Zeln tried to go with the Hawke's Ray h„ rso nut they hud no chance. Krinine stayed on well but Kipling, aided by n lucky run, cut her out of second coin on the post. Vole who looked well, did not get going very 'energetically, but lie was putting 'em in' at the finish. All Over got into a heap of trnub'e, and was "snowed In" on tlip fence the. whole Hold passing him just before turning for home. Oratress also shaped badly, but Ahlka who was badly loft, made up his ground In good style. A very warm favorite In Sail Home went

under in tho Ladies' Bracelet, the winner turning up in tho Patea-owneil Khartoum, who was ridden better than at Waverley, and after being ridden in behind, challenged Sail Home at tho half-distance, and won cleverly Silenus struggled on well under his 1211,' being a I ,l"j but no!hl »S complimentary could be said of the cattle behind film Sir Fanciful (0. McCarteu) was voted a moral In the Back Welter, and If ho had been handled with judgment he would have been home first. The favorite ran into the lead a good-three furlongs from home, but he made heavy going of it on the rails, and Ashley Reed brought Utnwal through on the better going, and got up in time to score by a length. Coral Queen finished well In third place, and then came Trombone and White Banger Trombone got out well, and had every chance, but ho ran very badly The last to finish was (".learning, wlto appears to be as slow as Gloaming is fast. The Marton meeting was concluded In fine but cold and windy weather. The course was in slightly better order, though somewhat sticky. The attendance was not as largo as on the opening day, but tho racing was fairly Interesting, though consistency was not a feature of. the meeting. Khartoum was a good favorite in the Hunters' Hurdles, but was never dangerous Metaltum and Sail Home were indulged with the lead for a mile, when Pawerewere was given his head, and that was the' end of it Sail Home ran It out well, but Khartoum only owed his third position to the tiredness of the others, A brace of heavily backed ones, Sir Fanciful and Egmont Park, had to put up with minor places in the Electric Hack Handicap Firce who carries Mr. G. M. Currlo's colors was soon taken to the front, and tho favorites apparently waited for her to come back—which she didn't, Prehably sir Fanciful could not have done much better with 9.3, but Egmont Park might have been handled better Another failure was Tempo, who began well' but finished a long way bark, Tho Hunt Club Cup was a pretty contest Nino were saddled up, and of these Stetson' Onipoto, Silenus, and Patarlki were best backed. When tho field settled down, Mac Patarlki, Stetson, and Silenus were racing in close order, but going along the back tile last time Stetson ran to the front. Then Patarlki and Silenus moved up, and there was little between the trio as they came into tbe straight Tho weight told on Stetson in the run home' and Silenus forged ahead, and easily disposing of Patarlki, won by five lengths, Stetson easing up, was a fair third, and Mac was the only other one to finish. Neflscho ran off, and Onipoto, Aurike. Papatere, and Argo got the stitch and were pulled up. Tho winner paid a remarkably good price. For a change first day's form worked out well in the Crofton Handicap. Omahu Zela and Penury Rose, the place-getters on' Wednesday, curried the bulk of the money and they finished in the first four. Penury Kose again acted as pacemaker, and the shorter distance favoring him. the son of Penurv lasted long enough to stall) off the t'astilnlshing Omahu. with The Speaker and Zola right up. Omahu ran a great race, but it was asking liim a big question to give 2Hlhs to Penury Hose under the circumstances.

Utnwal and Coral (juecn were the elect in the Stewards' Handicap, but both went under to Hie hitherto unluukv Klgnnrclla who licin better than usual, and finished very gamely Matlock was a prime favorite in tile Silverhope Steeplechase, but he jumped a bit too big to keep with the leading division at any part of It. Tioth Master Webster and Kurapai put more dash into llieir efforts than yesterday, and it was soon evident that liarring accidents they would pay the pay the dividends Kurapai made his run first, and although Master Webster tried hard to overhaul him In the straight tile former won by several lengths. iMatlock was a poor third,'and Sensitive and Ringi finished at long intervals Volo. who slarted seventh favorite on the first day, was simply rushed by the heads on Thursday, though the field was practically the same. Gold Problem and Sweet Corn ' were the early leaders, but Ahlka compounded, and then Volo, Kipling, and All Over put in their claims. Volo finished best, and beat Klpllne by u length. Racing concluded with the Farewell Hack Welter, for which Trombone and Papanui wero evenly supported. Master Boris and Rio woro prominent to the bend, but Pansuiul took the Shortost way home, aHd beat Master Boris very easily. Yankee Jack was a close third and then came the disappointing Trombone/
