GALLANT CLERGYMAN.
■WINS THE V.C. ITis Majesty has appointed Rev. Theodore Biiyley Hardy, V.C., D.5.0., M.C., 8.A., to bo one of his chaplains in tne room of Rev. Canon Gamble, the new Bean of Exeter. ' Rev. T. B. Hardy was the vicar of Hutton Roof, Ivirkby, Lonsdale, when, in August, 1910, he joined the forces as chaplain. He won the D.S-0. last autumn-for rescuing wounded after his wrist had been broken and put in splints, crawling to within 70 yards of the enemy lines and remaining with the wounded under heavy lire. He was later awarded the Military Cross for finding and carrying wounded over ground which was heavily shelled and where the casualties were very heavy The Victoria Cross was conferred on him last July "for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on many occasions." "Although over SO years of age/' the Gazette record went on, "he has, by his fearlessness, devotion to men of his battalion, and quiet, unobstrusive manner, won the respect anil admiration of the whole division. His marvellous energy and endurance would be remarkable even in a very much younger man, and his valor and devotion are exemplified in the following incidents," which are set out at length in the official statement.
