America stood for - the rights of small nationalities, hence his opposition to Italy's claims. President Wilson added: "I would rather have everybody on my side than be armed to the teeth." The Treaty was an' honest attempt tc right Europe's wrongs, and this was now witlifn a measurable degree of success. When this treaty was accepted American soldiers Would never have to cross the seas again. After the speech a Chinaman shouted ''How about Shantung?" The President did not reply.
