Out of ten Applicants, the Wanganui Harbor Board last night appointed Mr. F. Finch as resident engineer. Mr. Fincli is at present engineer to the Napier Harbor Board.—Preas Assn.
Mr. C. H. Drew, formerly of New Plymouth, who served in the Air Force during the war, left by the Moeraki yesterday for No.th-Western Australia, where he proposes to spend about a year. Mr. E. 0. Chivcra, who has just completed his twenty-fifth year of resident in Okaiawa, has disposed of his business, and is leaving for Auckland early in November.
Rev, E. Haddon, whose son, Oliver, Was one of the party to go with Rev. N, H. Papakakura to tour the States, has received a letter, wvitten from Rarotonga, saying they had a good trip and were all well. The party intend, after the American tour is completed, to proceed t'o England, and after by Suez to Australia.—Star.
A Ohristchurch telegram reports the death of Mr. Joseph Ivess, the veteran journalist and newspaper proprietor, aged 74. , Mr. Ivess was born in Ireland and emigrated with his parents to Australia in 1852. He came to New Zealand in 1868, and opened a printing business in Hokitika. He sat in the House for the Wakanui electorate in the eighties. He started 45 newspapers *in New South Wales and New Zealand. ,
The w'anganui Herald reports#that at a social gathering under the auspices of St. Paul's choir on Tuesday evening the opportunity _was taken to farewell Mr. and-Mrs. E.*M. Grant, members of the choir, who are leaving for New Plymouth. The chairman, Mr. J. Netflands, thanked the guests on behalf of the officebearers of St. Paul's for their services to the church, and wished them every happiness and prosperity. Appreciative references were also made by Messrs Derbyshire (conductor) and Ritchie (secretary) of the choir, Wing-Commander Robertson, of the battleship New Zealand, who is now on an official visit to New Plymouth, belongs to the Royal Air Force, but was previously a gunnery lieutenant-com-mander in the Royal' Navy. At the outbreak of war he was attached jointly to the staff of the Director of Naval Ordnance and the Director of the Air Division. He commanded H.M.S. Riviarn (seaplane carrier) till the end of 1015, and then commanded an aerial armament development and 1 experimental squadron at the Isle of Grain (Kent) Royal Naval Air Station. Subsequently lie was attached to the aerial armament section under the Ministry of Munitions, and commanded an. air station at Felixstowe. This' last position was relinquished in order to join the staff of Admiral Jellicoe for the trip to Australia and New Zealand.
