NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Tolegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The following are the results of to-day's play : Professionals' Match.—W. McEwan (Auckland), beat C. 8. Douglas (Miramar), 3 up and I to play. New Zealand Amateur Championship.—Kapl Tareha beat J. C. Bidwell, 2 up and 1; R. M. George beat F. C. Fryer, 2 up; H.' C. Crosse beat S. Turner, 7 and 6; A. McCormack beat A. 0. Wellwood, 3 and 2; Imlay Saunders beat H. W. Kelly, 6 and 5; W. O'Callaghan beat R. G. Banger, 3 and 2; A. D. S. Duncan beat K. D. Duncan, 4 and 3; 8. Morpeth beat H. B. Luak, 3 and 2.
In the afternoon tho handicap four-ball bogey was played, R. G. Ranger and W. Colbeck, of Auckland, 7 up, being the winners. H. E. Crosse and Kapl Tareha, of Napier, playing from scratch, handed in a fine card of 6 up. The following are the leading scores:—R. O. Ranger (6) and W. Colbeck (5), 7 up: Kapl Tareha (scr.) and H. E. THE DECISIVE BOUNDS. Napier, Sept. 3. The big event was tho play off of the Ue championship. Douglas again put up a great uphill fight and won by three strokes. At the first hole, Douglas overran the green and found the ball in the rough over th» fence. He played a lovely recovery, but failed to hole the putt. Morpeth, with a perfect 5, led by 1 stroke. Douglas bunkered off tho drive to the second hole, and then with three putts ran up 7. Morpeth mads a great recovery after he had duffed his mashte shot and holed in 5, thus leading by three strokes. The following six holes were halved In 4, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5, Morpeth holing a long putt at the fifth hole, Douglas missing yard putts at the seventh and eighth. Douglas made a perfect 4 at the sheep yards against the 6 of his opponent, and the couple turned for home with Morpeth one stroke in the lead. Douglas, after a great recovery at the tenth from a bunker, missed a four-foot putt to halve in 3, but recovered it at the 11th by a perfect 4. He Becured the lead at the long 13th. by a brilliant 4 against his opponent's 8. From this point Douglas was always the winner. A beautiful 4 at the tricky pah hole Increased his lead. Playing the 15th Morpeth drove out of bounds and holed out In 7. Douglas took 0, with three putt 3on the green again. A bad drive waß made by Douglas, but an excellent recovery was lost again on the green. Morpeth, with a 5, pulled one stroke off. He then missed a short putt at the 17th, where Douglas holed a two-yarder for 3 and played the last hole with a lead of three strokes. Morpeth topped his drive and secured a 5. Douglas, playing safe, halved and won the championship by three strokes. The scores ware: Douglas 82, Morpeth 85. A. Duncan nearly threw his match away against Kusabs, and was three down at the tenth. His opponent's playing was steady 4's and s's. Duncan wns putting weakly at green after green and failing to hole short ones He scrambled through on the las', hole 1 up. Kapl Tareha put up a great finish in his match against Humphreys Ho was three down with five to play, but holed the next four in 4, 4, 3, 4, winning them all. Humphreys had a putt to square the match, but failed by an Inch.
Bldwill, playing excellent golf, won his match easily. Be may yet be reckoned with, as he Is coming back to his best form.—Dominion Special.
