Mr. J. H. Quilliara has booked a passage to London by the s.s. Athenic, leaving Wellington on September 10. The condition of 'Mr H. Langman, we regret to state, shows no improvement and is causing his friends considerable anxiety. The many friends of Mr. H. Langman, of Waitara, will regret to hear that his condition is such as to cause grave anxiety. Mr. E. T. Reed is relieving Mr. C. Denny-Brown in charge of tho A.M.P. Society's New Plymouth branch. The latter is taking three weeks' holiday. Commodore. John 0. T. Glossop, C.8., of the Royal Navy, arrived by the Niagara, with his wife, to spend a few weeks' vacation in New Zealand. Commodore Glossop was in command of H.M.A.S. Sydney when she captured the German raider Emden. He is now in command of the naval establishment at Sydney.

Mr. J. Morton, who has been connected with the Christchurch telegraph engineer's branch as chief clerk for tho last few years, was on Saturday presented with a travelling bag, as a marl; of esteem, by the staff. The district engineer, in making the presentation; referred to Mr. Morton's faithful services and rapid progress in the department, and congratulated him on his promotion to relieving postmaster in the Canterbury district. A complimentary dinner was tendered to Mr. Hunter Booth, of the local staff of the Bank of New South Wales, by Mrs. Golding and the house party at "Rahui" on Wednesday evening, prior to his departure for Wellington by yesterday's mail train, where he is to undergo an operation on an old wound received at the battle of the Somme.' Mr. Lambert, in making a presentation of a fountain pen on behalf of the party, paid an appropriate tribute to Mr. Booth for hiß geniality and friendship towards everyone in the house, and hoped the gift would remind him of the pleasant associations he had had with them. Mr. Booth suitably replied.

The Wanganui Chronicle announces the deatli of one of the pioneer settlers of the district in the person of Mr. Alexander McGregor, who passed away in his sleep during Saturday night. The deceased, who wftß born in the Okoia district 65 years ago, was one of the "Auehmore" McGregors, who were so intimately associated with the early history of the district, and who were held in the highest regard in town and country. The Jate Mr. McGregor took a keen interest in all that pertained to the welfare of the district, and was for some years a member of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. . At a meeting of the executive subcommittee of the Hawera branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association on Tuesday night it was resolved: "That the association congratulate Major •T. B. Hine on his elevation to Cabinet rank, and the Right Hon. the Erime Minister on his action "in appointing a returned soldier as one of his colleagues in the Government of New Zealand. In doing so, the association—a stritftly nonparty organisation—wishes to'- make it clear that its action 'would have been the Same if Sir Joseph Ward or any other'political leader had been his Excellency's chief adviser and had appointed a returned soldier to Ministerial rank."
