WAIKATO LANDS.

SUGGESTED FOR SOLDIER SETTLE- , MENTS. By Telegraph.—Preßa Association. Wellington, Sept. 3. A deputation to Mr. Massey and the Minister of Lands this morning suggested that the Government should acquire for soldier and general settlement land at present lying idle in the Waikato district. It was pointed out that, whereas the Government was expending large sums' in the purchase of highly developed and high-priced lands it neglected land which could be made to provide a profitable return and aid in satisfying the cry for increased production. Mr. Massey replied that the Government must be guided by existing legislation, and the reports of departmental officers, but would consider the whole matter and the purchase of any unimproved block which might be bought profitably by the Government.
