A THRILLING RESCUE.
PLUCKY ACT OP DROVERS. ■ By Telegraph.—Press Association. Whakatane, Last Night. A thrilling rescue story is narrated from the Tarawora River mouth last Saturday. Three drovers, F. W. McLean, Alan Stewart, and IT. Pryor, who were travelling from Tc Puke, drove a mob of horses across the flooded river and themselves followed. When in midstream, Pryor's horse got into difficulties, unseating Pryor, who was wearing a heavy oilcoat. He was carried away by the flood, but got a temporary footing on a sandspit, yet, losing it again, was swept out into the breakers. McLean and Stewart, having landed safely, galloped to the rescue. McLean, telling Stewart to stand ashore, swam out to Pryor, and soon signalled for assistance, whereupon Stewart, who was waiting in the breakers up to his armpits, also swam, out, and together they landed their mate safely.
