ERUPTIONS AND "NERVES."
REPORTS REGARDING WHITE ISLAND.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gpotiki, Aug. 29. The publication of certain reports concerning an eruption at White Island are the cause of much amusement and ridicule in this district. As far as is known here, the island has been quite normal for a considerable time, subject to the variations mentioned. The report that a cloud of smoke seen from Auckland was the result of an eruption on White Island cannot be taken seriously, and the report that tremors were heard and felt on the mainland are absolutely without foundation. A series of mild thunderstorms occurred about the time mentioned, and the flashes of light referred to were probably due to lightning, the rumbling to thunder, and the tremor to "nerves 1 ."
