NEW ZEALANDER IN CAUCASUS.
WITH DENIKEN'S ARTILLERY.
An appointment as technical adviser for the artillery of General Deniken'sforces in the Caucasus has been received by Major M. Jordan, a native of Wellington. Writing to his brother, Mr. Thomas Jordan, 'of Masterton, on June S, he said he was then on his way to the Caucasus as technical adviser to" the Russian artillery. On the outbreak of war Major Jordan was an engineer in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company, but resigned his post while in London and joined the British Army as a private: • Early in 1(115 lie went to Flanders with the reinforcements foe the First Division, and served in the de r fence of Ypres. For services in the field, he was recommended in turn for a commission in-■■the artillery, .the infantry l ,' (ind also in the Army Ordnance Corps! to which lie was finally posted. After three months at Woolwich Ordnance College, he passed his examination as inspector of ordnance, and was then appointed inspector of coast defences from Bristol to Devonport. From there, he was sent to Salonika, and finally to'the British Expeditionary Force in the East where he took part in the overthrow of tho Turkish forces and gained his captaincy. In his letter he states that General Deniken's army in the Caucasus consists- v<#y largely of Cossacks, and they have a fair number of British guns The only staff ho is taking with him is a small party of expert artificers, who have volunteered for the purpose.
