Speaking at the American Luncheon Club in London in May last, where lie was the principal guest, Major-Gcneral Biddle, of the United States Army, said American activities in Great Britain in connection with the war were drawing to a close, and the Americans were g<Ting or would shortly be gone, There were now fewer than 101)0 American soldiers employed in Loudon. Out'of. the 2,000,000 soldiers who -went from America to France over 1,000,000 passed through England, sometimes at the rate of 200,000 a month.
It was wonderful how Britain, although supplying r .o much of her 'own forces, was able to supply them with so mueh-~everything from white mice and guinea- pigs to complete ambulance trains and big guns, Goods to a value of over a billion dollars ( .0200,000,000) were ordered here when peace came. For example, a 500-mile telegraphic line and a cable were laid connecting the base in England with headquarters in France at a cost of ±'700,000.
The Quartermaster's Department bought ovor £20,000,000 worth of goods. The Orders Department gave orders amounting, to #50,000,000, including 400,000,000 rounds of riflo. ammunition! It) all their dealings with tho British Goyprnment they had been treated liberally, openly, and fairly.
