STRATFORD.

The school children travelling to Stratford were not allowed to make use of the mail train, though there were a number of empty carriages at Inglewood station on Tuesday morning. The children had, therefore, to travel by the slow train, which did not reach Stratford till about 11.20. Mr. It. Masters, chairman of the Education Board, is making representations to the Department. A number of returned soldiers arrived m Stratford yesterday and were welcomed by the Mayor. The Rev. K. Palgravc Davy, superintendent of the New Zealand Children's Mission, opened a united young life campaign in the Methodist hall on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance and the mission promises to be very successful. On Monday a large motor lorry with a load of 3000 niacrocarpa plants passed through Stratford en route to Inglewood, where Mr. A. B. Gamlin is planting 5000 trees. Up to the present the name of the Liberal candidate for the Stratford seat has not been announced. It i 3 probable that Mr. R. Masters will be selected. It is believed by many that he has the best chance of winning the seat for the Liberal party. There was a meeting of Liberals in Stratford yesterday, but it | is unlikely that anything definite will be done till country supporters of the Liberal eausp have been given an opportunity of expressing their views, Some of Mr. C. D. Sole's admirers waited upon him oh Monday with a request that he would consent to nomination. .Vfr. .Top. Boon has also been approached. A ladies' golf match will be played r.n Stratford links on Friday between Stratford and Inglewood. To-day, commencing at 1 p.m., Mr. T,. Lama-son will sell by auction a large quantity of household furniture on behalf of Mrs. Inglis, at her residence, Seytou Street.
The I'.A.C. will hold a clearing sale of furniture, farm implements, and live stock, on behalf of Mr. R. Richardson, Warwick Road, to-day (Thursday), commencing at 12.30 p.m. Waimate West must be a very prosperous county.
