PURCHASE OF WOOLLEN MILLS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchureh, Yesterday. It is Teported here that Macky, Logan & Co. have purchased the Timaru woollen milk and are negotiating for the purchase of tho Oamaru mills. YOUTHFUL BURGLARS. 1 Christchureh, Yesterday, Eight lads, ranging from 13 to 15% years, wero brought before Mr. McCarthy, R.M., charged with breaking, entering, and theft. There were 35 charges against them altogether, including 21 against one bo.y, 18 againßt another, and 17 against a third. The Magistrate said that most of the boys had been before the court previously and failed to keep their promises to reform. Some of the cases were attributed to the conditions of their home life. , All the accused pleaded guilty, seven were committed to training farms, and the other admitted to probation for two years and ordered to receive ten strokes with the birch. Orders were made for payment for the damage done.

HOSPITAL APPOINTMENT. Christchureh, Yesterday. . The Hospital Board decided to appoint Mm Muir lady superintendent. The proposal to re-appoint Miss Thurßton, formerly lady superintendent, who wag granted leave of absence for war services and is filling the position of matron-in-chief of New Zealand hospitals in England, was defeated on the casting vote of the chairman. THEFT OF MOTOR-CYCLES. Palmerston N„ Yesterday. Tn the Police Court Albert Edward McKenna pleaded guilty to the theft o{ three motor-cycles and one motor-cycle engine and was committed to the Su-i preme Court for sentence.

A largely-attended meeting of the Waiknto Returned Soldiers' Association passed a motion approving of political action being taken by the association, and approving the preliminary platform submitted by the Auckland Provincial Committee. The meeting considered that the constitution of the New Zealand Association should be amended to permit of such action. FIXED PRICES FOR PRODUCE. Christchureh, Last Night. There was a spirited discussion at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union on the subject of the desirableness of the Government contiuuing to commandeer certain of Ihe products of the Dominion, and fir. l the price of the same. The motion beforo the meeting was forwarded by the Oxford branch, and iread: "That this branch approves of fixed prices for a year or two to come, but not lower than' previously, and provided thd Dominion Government received the profits " The idea was generally favored, but before 1 tcmitting the matter to the conference it was decided that the branches Miomd discuss the matter and report to the next meeting.

MEETING OF SHEEPOWNERS' UNION. Christchureh, Last Night. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheepowucrs/ Union, the chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, mentioned that the Union was in no way up against labor, believing in the true British principle that the other man should be heard. Regarding the sale and distribution of meat, it was agreed that no delegation should be sent to England to discuss the question at Home until the Federated Meat Committee had been called together. It was decided to approach the Minister of Agriculture with a view to obtaining a reduction in the draft allowance on wool. It was resolved to take steps to form a New Zealand Producers' Cooperative Association. The rabbit nuisance was discussed, and it was agreed that Captain Neale should be written to regarding the use of gas for the destruction of the pest, while the following resolution was also carried: That in the opinion of the sheepowners of Canterbury, it is not in the best interests of the province that lucrative trade be built up in rabbit export and rabbit furj that the national interests arc best served by the extermination of the rabbit. Mention was made of the ravages of keas among the high country flocks, and it was decided to urge the Government to be more earnest in their steps to exterminate these birds-

HOUSES FOR WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night, The City Council adopted a report of the Housing Committee, recommending tho erection of forty dwellings in concrete, brick, or other equally durable material on land owned by the corporation. The houses when erected are to be sold to approved applicants by ballot.

PRICE OF CHRISTCHURCH PAPERS. Christchureh, Last Night. The Press, Times, and Sun Companies announce that after September 1, the price of their newspapers'will be lid to regular subscribers and 2d 'to' casual purchasers. The proprietors state that Canterbury is the only province in the Dominion in which the selling price of newspapers remained unchanged thrdughout the war, but the ever-increasing advance in the cost of paper, coupled with similar advances on other materials, and the steady increase in the.general cost of production ,left them no alternative.
