Tho depositions against Gaston Quien, the alleged betrayer of Nurse Cavel), state that accused is an intelligent scapegrace who has frequently been in* prison. He was released in September, 1914, penniless. The Germans supplied him with money and found him a willing tool. He met a girl named Balligan, who was working for Nurse Cavoll's organisation. Balligan, believing him to be loyal, offered him the services of the organisation in order to get back to France, thus Quien learned the whole system. Mademoiselle Thuliez states that she introduced him to Nurse Cavcll, but suspected his exaggerated professions of patriotism. Quien reached Holland, posing as a French officer, but returned to Brussels, and several'members of the organisation were arrested a few days later.
