A Berlin cable records the death of Professor Friedrich Nauniann, the author of "Mittel Europa." The death occurred at Kapuni op Saturday of Mr. John Willis, at the age fii 81 years. A Wellington message announces the death of Richard Moleaworth Taylor, formerly member for Sydenham, at Wellington yesterday, at the age of 85. The death occurred at Hawera Hospital on Monday of Mrs. des Forges, wife of Mr. Percy des Forges, of Manaia, at the age of 30 years. Judge R. N. Jones has been, appointed Chief Judge of the Native Land Court,, in succession to the late Chief Judge Palmer. i Messrs W. T. Jennings, S. G. Smith, : and J. B. Hine, M's P., proceeded to Wcl- j lington by yesterday's mail train. ■•■■ Mr.' C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., went to Wellington last week. Mr. A. Morton was yesterday reelected chairman and managing director of the Egmout Box Company, a position' he is filling during the absence of Mr. J. B. Murdoch in America. Mrs. M. A. McKoy, Hine Street, lias received notice that her son, Prlyate 1?. Oj McKoy, is returning by the Corinthic, due in Wellington on September 22. Six of Mrs. McKoy's sons went to the front, and Private F. 0. McKoy is the fifth to return. The youngest of the six sons was killed in action. By the Shropshire, which sailed for London the other day, left Mr A. F. Meldrum, L.L.B. (son of Brigadier-Gen-eral Meldrum, who rendered splendid service with the New Zealand Kxpeditior.ary Force). Mr Meldrum was New Zealand's Rhodes scvholar for 1017. lie has had-a brilliant university career, and while a student at Victoria College enlisted when war broke out. After servia-- in Samoa Mr Meldrum left New Zealand in 1916 with the 13th Reinforcement, and was wounded in the battle of the Somme. He subsequently served with credit in Palestine, and was promoted to lieutenant- Mr Meldrum will be a student at New College, Oxford, where he will take a special course in law.
