REPATRIATION COMMITTEE.

A meeting of tile New Plymouth Repatriation Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs 0. H. Weston (chairman), W. J. Chaney, T. Furlong, E. Carter, F. W. Okey, R. J. Clarke, E. Whittle, T. C. List, J. 11. Rowlands, H. R. Cattley, E. B. Ellerm, and the secretary (Mr. A. S. Allen). The secretary reported that there were five names on the unemployment register, all but one requiring light work There had been Ave applicants for houses and three for land. They had been furnished with information and referred to the Crown Lands Commissioner.

It was decided to make special efforts to find work for the unemployed men. The statistical return for the month ending August 20 stated that 3fi applications had been received for assistance, of which 30 had been approved and six withdrawn. Eighteen were for furniture, seven for purchase of businesses, and six for stock. There were also 17 pending. Three men had been found employment. Seven men were attending technical schools, nine were being trained in various workshops and three on farms, all of whom received trainees' allowances. Eight applications for financial help in purchasing dairy covys, plant, etc., ranging from sums of £IOO to £3OO, were dealt with, Seven were approved, and the other is to be further inquired into. Seven men were granted advances for furniture. Subsidies were granted to two men taking up new occupations. In two cases giants were made to cover tuition fees at a commercial college and correspondence school, The chairman briefly reported upon the work War Relief Conference at Stratford last week.
