SCHOOLMASTER FINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, Aug. 2».Judgment was given to-day by Mr. Stout, S.M., in tiie case of A. O. Bushier headmaster of the West .Knd School, Palmerston North, who was charged with assaulting Jack Cornford, a pupil at the school. The Magistrate recorded a conviction, holding that the master administered excessive punishment and that the medical evidence showed that the punishment was beyond moderation, and inflicted a fine of £2 and costs £7 lis Bd.
COAL SHORTAGE IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, Lust Night. Coal stocks for the manufacture of gas are dangerously low in Auckland, and householders are being warned of the necessity for rigid economy in connection, with the gas service. SERIOUS CHARGES. Gisborne, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court, Joseph Crook appeared on remand charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of ten years. A further charge against accused was that of attempted carnal knowledge of another girl under the age of ten. Mr. Burnard, who appeared for accused at a previous sitting, withdrew from the case. The Magistrate committed accused for trial at the Supreme Court on the two charges, and stated that no bail would be granted. meat m Stores in Britain. Wellington, Last Night. Information has been received that the quantity of meat in the cold stores in the United Kingdom is GO.OOO tons equal to about two and a quarter millions of freight carcases. There is, besides, a fairly large quantity of bacon and other meats, such as rabbits and poultry. The oni a n L cold stora S e s P ace in Britain is 200,000 tons. SHORTAOK OF BUTTER.
Invercargill, Last fright. Butter supplies in Invercargill arc practically exhausted. Many retailers declare they cannot guarantee supplies fit least for a fortnight. T ~ , , Foxton, Aug. 28. in the local court yesterday, Mr. Stout, i>M., convicted and fined a man £lO for theft of vegetables from a Chinese garden, and two young men £lO each for stealing vegetables, and £5 each for assaulting a Chinaman. Five boys were convicted and fined 16s each for stealing irom a Chiuese shop window.
