Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., leaves for Wellington by the mail train this morning in order to attend Parliament.
Owing to indisposition the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) was unable to be present at tho General Purposes Committee of the Borough Council last evening. A Christchurch telegram reports' that Mr W- 11. E. Wanklyh, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club for nrarly 30 years, has resigned on account of illhealth.
An Auckland telegram reports that Major Thomas Brown, F.E.S., formerly Uovernment etomologist, died on Sunday, aged 81.
The Peilding Star says there is a strong probability that Mr Clutha Mackenzie will stand for the North Rangitikci seat at the coming general ejections.
Mr and Mrs F. Richards have received word that thoir son, Sergeant Leo. G. Kichards, is returning on the Tainui due in Wellington on September 21. Mr W. J. Smith, of Hillsborough, Has leceived cable advice that his son, Private H. J. Smith (Jim) is returning with draft 284, H.M.T. Corinthic, due übout September 22nd.
Mr, H. B. Leppor was last night elected chairman of directors of tile Lepporton Dairy Company, with which he has been connected for the past 27 yearn. In moving the resolution, Mr. Blackball referred to the untiring energy, uniform courtesy, and great capacity of the chairman in the conduct of the company's affairs. . '
