Auckland, Aug. 23, The representative rugby l'ootball match between Auckland and Taranakl was played today In tho presence of 10,000 spectators. The game needs little description, Auckland wlnr.'iiK by 42 points to nine. In the first •■pell, Taranakl showed some promise, and at half-time the scores were Auckland ' 19 Taranakl 0 Auckland held the upper hand through tho Second spell, although Taranakl succeeded In < loosing the home line three times. Tate, King, and Carlson then caught the eye In close forward work, which brought relief to Taranakl, but with Auckland getting the ball in tho scram their backs had every chance and were taking full aovantoge of It. A high kick was rumbled by Hndeley at his own line, and Tate and Bishop muzzled him and took tho bali over the lino, where Tate got a try, which was not Improved. The game thus ended Auckland 42 Taranakl 9 The Taranakl men did not plnv weak football, but they got very Utile of the ball In :,lie scrum, while their backs were smothered In attack by the fast following of the Auckland forwards. In defence, the visitors took man for man, but with the Aucklanders ploying in combination, really above their ordinary form, Ihoy had the man In time, and again, by their cross-kicking and short punting continually fooled the defenders out of place. A MERITORIOUS WIN. N.P. HIGH SCHOOL BEATS GRAMMAR SCHOOL. (By Wire.—Special to Dally News) Auckland, Aug. 2H The curtain raiser for the Auckland Tnroiiakl iratcli was a triumph for New Plymouth nifh School, for the local Grammar School was confidently expected to win. The Taranakl b ys were not so nippy as the Grammar lads uieong the backs, but their forwards outclassed the Grammar pack In open piny and wore them down.
A penalty goal by Cox gave Grammar tho lint score, but this was almost Immedlatory kpped by Brown dropping a goal for tho nigh School. Early in tho second spell, an Intercepted oass by Cox and a transfer to Cashmore, gave Grammar the lead again by six to four, hut a fine penalty goal by Osborne put the visitors once more In front. MANAWATU. A DIIAWN GAME. Palmerston North, Aug. 23 Tho Wanganui and Manawatu represenatlve match was. played here to-day In fine ■vtathor. thcro being a largo attendance. Tho game resulted In a draw, six points being siored by oach learn. In the first spell, W«ngo.iul, aided by strong winds, attacked vigorously, but the superior weight of the Manawatu forwards and the good defence of tho backs frustrated them crossing tho line. The scores at half-time were: Wanganui 3 (penalty goal kicked by Head), and Manawatu 3 (penalty goal by J. Stewart). In the second half tho home team gained the mastery. Falrbrother made on opening from which Carroll scored, but the try was not converted. On the call of time Wanganui had a shot from a free kick, and although Carroll touched the ball, the referee awarded a goal. Tho referee's decision was strongly commented upon. THE LEAGUE GAME. AUSTRALIANS DEFEAT NEW ZEALAND. .Wellington, Aug. 23. Ihe League match, Australia v. New Zealand was played to-dny on tho Basin Reserve. The weather was fine, tho ground In good "'.dor, and there was a large gathering. Tho g;>mo, which was fast and open, resulted in a victory for the Australians by 44 to 21. >*oth sides made many fine passing rushes, and' the tockllng was good, also the gamo was by no means one-sided, tho home team making many fruitless attacks. Johnston, who started many of the Australians' passing rushes, showed great Initiative, and Ford's place-kicking was very fine. ' SENIOR COMPETITIONS. Tho senior competition was continued on Sr.uirdny, when Clifton met Old Boys, and Star inet Rnhotu. The games could not In any way aircct tho result of the division premiership, as Clifton had already established a clear lead of three points, which was further Increased bv two points as the result of tho matches oh fenlurday.
