UNSTABLE INDUSTRIES. GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. By Teleernph —Press Assn Conyrinht. Received Aug. 24, 5.5 p.m. London, Aug. 22. Mr. Lloyd George's summary of the Government's policy in dealing with unstable key industries defines them as fulfilling the following tests, namely: Products essential for war or the maintenance of the country during war; an industry so neglected before the war that there was nn inadequate supply of the product; an industry about which the Government lias found it necessary to take special steps during the war'; an industry which, if special Government support were withdrawn, could not maintain itself at the level of production essential to national life.
It is proposed that the fees charged for the issue of licenses to import goods produced by such unstable industries shall bo fixed, with regard to each case, to the difference between the price at which the article can. be imported and the price at which a similar article can be sold in the United Kingdom. Received Aug. 2-I', 5.5 p.m. London, Aug. 23. The police raided the premises of the Industrial Workers of the World at Whitechapel, and discovered a great quantity of literature advocating sabotage. VARIOUS TRADES BOOMING. Received Aug. 25, 12.40 a.m. London, Aug. 24, The National News states that the cotton, woollen, lace, iron, and steel trades are booming, despite the high prices of coal. Many manufacturers are unable to execute now orders. Shares in cotton spinning companies Lave risen rapidly during the last few weeks.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
