.BELIEF OF POLTAVA. INHABITANTS CRY FOR JOY. JTHES BRITISH FORCE ARRIVE. By TelssMph—Press A»sn —Copyright. Received Aug. 24, 5.5 p.m. London, Aug. 22. Dr. Harold Williams, writing to the Daily Chronicle from Kharkoff, after an extensive tour of the Poltava district, describes the intense joy of the inhabitants on being liberated after the terrors of the Red regime, when no one was secure against raids, arrest, confiscation, and aecret executions by the Terror Chamber. The so-called nationalisation of trade transport has forced prices into fantastic figures, and driven goods off the market until Poltava is nearly starved. Although there are hundreds of miles of glorious steppes around, everywhere richly cultivated, and harvest reapers are busy in every field, yet the price of the loaf at Poltava is five hundred times normal price. The entry of the Guards and Cossacks into Poltava was a memorable scene. Women and children wept for joy and kissed the British General Holman's hands and carried him on their shoulders. —AUS.-N.2.
