PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Peace Celebrations Committee was held last night, Mr. J. D. Sole presiding. There were also present: Messrs. R. L. McElroy, Buttiinove, R. J. Deare, E. Bennoeh, A. Roberts, J. Garcia, E. Day, and F. TBellringer. The balance-sheet showed receipts as follows:—Harbor Board £lO 10, Jockey Club £lO 10, Borough Council £IOO, Borough Council £lB5, a. Wooldridge £5, H. Burgess £1 10s, W. C. Weston £1 10s, J. S. Fox il Is, Anonymous, Mrs. Emeny, Ambury Bros., A. B. Waldie, P. J. Flanagan £l, Friend (2) 10s each, Mrs. Ford ss. Eeceipts: Children's Ball £74 4s, Citizens' Ball £ll2 18s Cd, tickets £3 15s; total £513 Is (Id. Expenditure: General £5 3s Bd, advertising £32 Is, Thanksgiving services £lB 19s 9d, procession to Pukekura Park £46 14s, night procession, fireworks, and bonfire £52 Is Hd, illuminations £4B 17s 3d, children's day £7O 4s Id, Peace Ball £134 lis 2d, tree planting £l6 6s, football £2 19s 6d; total £439 19s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £73 Is Od. The balance-sheet was adopted. Messrs. Burgess, Fraser, and Co. donated a large number of bags and also some lollies. Mr. E. Day submitted a list of donations promised towards the hire of motor cars for Children's Day, as already published. Every car from all the garages was on the" road that day, and the thanks of the committee were due especially to Messrs. Newton King, ft. Wooldridge, G. Gibson, Criterion Garage, A. J. Smith, H. Derby and Co., together with all the private car owners who turned out, also Mr. Cobham for erecting the photographic stand, to the gentlemen who took charge of the various sections of the cars, and those went to Inglewood in charge of lorries, and to the two bands. Messrs. H. A. Stratford (Central), A. V. Sims (Frankley), on behalf of the teachers, wrote expressing their appreciation of the complete arrangements made for the conveyance of the 1800 children. , It was resolved to accord a hearty vote of thanks to all who had assisted in any way towards the peace celebrations. The secretary of the Soldiers' Club Reunion Committee applied for a donation towards the forthcoming reunion. It was resolved to vote £6 of the £56 balance from the ball to the Returned Soldiers' Reunion Committee. Some discussion ensued over the disposal of the balance. Mr. Eobcrts suggested that the money should be utilised to complete the scheme of planting I. : ardet Street,' which, he understood, was to be re-named. Peace Avenue. He also suggested that the ladies who worked for the Peace Ball should be entertained. The chairman stated that tree-plant-ing might be of a temporary nature, as while the present Borough Council might flavor it another Council might consider they left the streets damp and caused litter, and would have them cut down. He favored the money being spent on Pukekura Park, the East End Reserve,. Kawaroa Park, or Western Park, the latter having a scheme for erecting a memorial gate and a fence along Morley Street. Mr. Deare supported this. Mr. C. E. Bellringer said that if a Peace Memorial was to be erected it Should be erected in a more central position, and if the idea, was to be a permanent Peace Memorial it should be put aside as the nucleus of the fund, the site to be settled later. It was pointed out that this was not intended as a peace memorial. ; . Mr. Bellringer said that sooner orrater the Borough would have to take over the parks. He thought that the committee's wishes should be considered Moreover the Peace Celebration Committee had planted 16 trees, and they should utilise the balance to complete I the work. • Mr. Eoberts moved that the 'balance be devoted to planting trees in Liardet Street. Mr. Bennoeh seconded. Mr. E. J. Deare moved as an amendment that th* money be voted to the Western Park Board towards the cost of memorial gates at Western Park. The amendment was lost and the resolution carried.
