•» THE STRATFORD SEAT. A deputation yesterday waited upon Mr. Joseph McOluggage, president of the Liberal and Labor League formed some years ago, and presented him with ft strong requisition to accept nomination in the Liberal interests for the Stratford seat at the forthcoming election. J?or health and other reasons Mr. McCluggage said he could not accede to the request, but the deputation declined to accept this as definite, anil asked Mr. McCluggage to consider the request and give a final reply on Monday. Mr. McCluggage gave a News' representative to understand that there wa3 no likelihood of his standing, even if no other reason than that indifferent health would alone prevent him. Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. for Taranaki, addressed a meeting of electors at the Hurford Road school yesterday, Mr. S. Vickers presiding over an attendance of about 30 electors. Mr. Smith, who spoke for an hour and a quarter, was given an attentive hearing, and at the conclusion of the address a number of questions were askeif and satisfactorily answered. At the close of the meeting a vote of thanks, proposed by the chairman and seconded by Mr. A.-Woods, was unanimously carried with acclamation.
