A Sydney cable reports the death of Bishop Dunne, of Bathurut. A London cable, states that General Sir VV. R. Birdwood has received the Freedom of the City of Totnes. Mrs. E. A. O'Donnell, Devon Street, lias received advice that her fourth, son to return, Corporal M. J. O'Donnell, ii aboard the Ayrshire, due to arrive at Lyttcltou on September 19. Mr. C. Peach, stationmaster at New Plymouth, has been granted extended holiday leave. Mr. J. J. O'Shea has been appointed acting-stationinaster in the meantime. Mr. Ira J. Bridgfer is being nominated by the Eltham School Committee for the vacancy on the Taranaki Education Board caused by the retirement of Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P. At Wellington last evening an investiture was held at Government Houso at which the Governor-General presented letters patent of knighthood to Sir J. W. Salmond and Sir W. B. Edwards, and a number of other 'badges and decorations.—Press Assoc. It is understood that Judge E, Jones, of the Native Land Court, will be appointed Chief Judge in succession to the late Chief Judge Jackson Palmer. Judge Jones is at present the Court's (senior Judge, and during the illness of the late Chief Judge he occupied that position. Dr. W. H. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is at present in a private hospital at Hamilton. Bishop Cleary reached the Waikato centre- ..» Thursday of last week, on a Visit to the clergy of the district, but he-became seriously ill, and was compelled to seek medical aid. His condition at first occasioned milch alarm, but if was reported at a late hour on Sunday- evening that he had shown considerable improvement. The Rev. John Dukes, a retired and much respected Minister of the Methodist Church, died at Te Aroha on Saturday, aged 74.,. Mr. Dukes was born at Ruggeley, Staironlshire,- England, m -Hrta, and was.apprenticed to tyio drapery trade when he was twelve years old. lie bej&n to preach, in 1800, and after thirton years' experience he became a candidnio for the Wesleyan ministry.
