MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS.
HANDSOME DONATION BY BEIa. BLOCK FACTORY. The suppliers of the Bell Block Dairy Company on Wednesday practically unanimously decided to vote £3OO towards the erection, in some central position, of a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Bell Block, Hillsborough, and Tarurutaugi districts. Mr. J. S. Connett, chairman of the company, stated that he was bringing up the matter at the annual meeting of the factory because it was a representative meeting of Hillsborough and Bell Block settlers, and, though the matter had been briefly discussed by a few, it was difficult to get residents of both districts together. As far as New Plymouth waK concerned, he understood they supported the idea of a rest room in the Nurses' Home as something to commemorate those who had fallen, and he would like the opinion of the meeting as to whether they should join in that movement or erect a memorial in some central part of their own district. Two places had been .suggested, either the Church g;ound or the open space in front of the store. He understood that Tikoningi. and Lepperton were erecting memorials in their own districts- Whatever they did he would like to see done properly. Mr. Stanley considered that a public meet:ng should be called at which the mothers should have a say. He reminded suppliers that those who would never come back had give* their all, so that whatever they gave would be a very small thing in comparison. Mv Ogle moved: "That this meeting is in favor of a memorial being erected by the three districts at a central place to be decided upon, land is prepared to vote the sum of £3OO as the nucleus of a fund thereto. If the districts concerned desire to have separate memorials, the fund could be divided pro rata between Hillsborough and Bell Block." This was seconded by Mr. Sampson and carried.
On the motion of Messrs. Sampson and Jackson, it was resolved to set up a committee comprising two . representatives each of Bell Block, Hillsborough, and Tarurutangi, with Mr. J. S. Connett as chairman, to arrange for public meetings and canvass for subscriptions, etc. Messrs. H. C. Sampson and P. Stanley were appointed to represent Hillsborough, and Messrs. Geo. King and A. W. Ogle to represent Bell Block.
