OPUNAKE.
(Prom Our Own Correspondent) A deputation of electors from various parts of this district went thrown to Eltham on Monday morning to Interview Mr Wilkinson, M.P. with n view to prevailing upon him to reconsider his decision not to seels re-election at the general election. The deputation was a repi-esentatlvo one, and the members were optimistic enough to believe they would persuade Mr Wilkinson •to reconsider his decision, hut evidently they did not meet v>lth success. A meeting of the Harbor Board was held on Monday morning. Fresent: Messrs T P Huphson (chairman), ,T. Conaglen, M. O'Brien' C. H. Hurst, B. Campbell, E. S. Forsyth, and M. Hlckey. The meeting was to consider. Mr Blair Mason's report. The report affirmed Mr Cyrus Williams' plans for an outer rubble wall. Mr Mason's estimate for constructing the wall, excavation for goods sheds and reading was- £58,000. Like Mr Williams, Mr Mason did not consider the inner or smaller scheme commendable. The report was obtained from Mr Mason primarily with a view to satisfying the supporters of the "inner" scheme Both experts have affirmed the policy agreed on by the board, and the board will now be able to defeat the opposition. The board has decided to go to the ratepayers for their sanction to borrow £50,000, this helng the full amount the board Is empowered to borrow. The Northern Company's boat could not unload cargo here on Sunday owing to the heavy sea swell.
The.funeral of thejate Mr C. S. Srronge was largely attended on Sunday, old Identities from all parts of the district paying their last respects to one who had shored the burdens of pioneer work. The managers of the Opunake Presbyterian Church (of whom deceased was an active membor) acted as The Rev. .T. Mills celebrated the last snd rites at the graveside. Mr R. Morrissey's mart sales have been well attended and the prices realised good.
A'ery little interest was taken in the noil for the hydro-electric proposals. Fifty-nine ratepayers votod In favor and six against. At Ihe previous poll double the number of ratepayers voted. There is one prominent feature: At both polls the ratepayers have affirmed practically unanimously the loan proposals. This should encourage the board to lose no further time in getting to work
