THE STERLING EXCHANGE. DEMORALISED IN AMERICA. By Telegraph.—P, - ess Assn —Copyrlsht. Received Auu. 2(1, 245 p.m. New York, Aug. II). The New York sterling exchange has dropped to 424 cents. The s;orllng exchange Is demoralised, It being now 410 cents to the pound. Banking circles expect a further reduction unless stabilisation is established. Tho decline is attributed to Mr. Lloyd George's announcement on the abandonment of extreme Import restrictions, I REDUCING TAX ON FLOUR. Received Aug. 20, 1 p.m. London, Aug. 19. The Treasury, on the advice of the Wheat Commission, has reduced the tax on flour not to to be used for bread milking from 3Cs per 280 lbs. to 248, The Committee of National Expenditure believes it Is possible to abolish the bread subsidy at the end of tho year, owing to the increasing home production and the prospective Australian and Canadian supplies. At the London sales competition was keen, all sections operating, prices being firm all round.
