YOUNG MAN MISSING. Gisborne, Lost Night. No trace has been found of a missing young man, named Linton Rtincirnan. Runclman spent the week-end at his home at Makiraka station, anc: left on Sunday to return to Horohora station in company with another. They had to cross a flooded creek. Runciman's mate was swept down the stream, where he scrambled out, but saw no sign of his companion. A searcli #as instituted, and subsequently Runciman'a horse was found on the opposite side of the creek. The misisng man had only just returned from service in Franco.
BIG FREIGHT OF MEAT. Napier, Last Wight,
The steamer Camana, which arrived in Ballast from Britain, via Panama today, is to load 95,000 freight carcases of muttcn and lamb at Napier, the largest shipment of meat ever lifted here, Tho vessel will proceed direct to England from here.
' EXPENSIVE BLANKETS. Wanganui, Last Night. Andrew Fibbs pleaded guilty to having uncustomed blankets in his possession at the Court this morning. He was convicted and fined £25. CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED BAIL. BREAKING. Wanganui, Last Night. A man named Abbott was charged with attempting to abscond from bail. The circumstances are that Abbott was bailed out last Monday by McKhvain, who was a stranger to Abbott. McEiwain arranged to see Abbott the,following day, but Abbott, McElwain, made inquiries from the police and ascertained that Abbott had left for Wellington, from where a boat, of which ho was recently deck steward, was about to sail. McElwain laid an information, and Abbott was arrested. Mr. Mackay appeared for accused, and said that when Abbott was released it was necessary for him to go to Wellington to be paid off from the ship, and collect his belongings and endeavour to collect evidence. Accused denied any intention of breaking bail, and never went; near the *hip. The Magistrate considered the present bondsman should not be responsible for accused, who was committed to prison to await trial, A MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. Auckland, Last Night. At the inquest to-day, the coroner returned a verdict that Leonard Norman Fisher died on July 19 from injuries received by a collision with a cycle ridden, by Carl Melville Hoffman, and the bicycle was properly lighted. The coroner expressed the opinion that Hoffman, who was riding down an incline, should have been able to see deceased and avoid him. The police formally charged Hoffman with manslaughter. He was remanded till August 25 on bail of £2OO.

Hanan explained that tho Education Department had no power to condemn schools or to erect schools. The Department could not deal with school building or school sites.
