It is reported that Major A. H, Wilkie, of Ohakune, who has arived back in the Dominion, is to be asked to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for Taumarunui seat at the general election.

Mr. E. Cartwright, of Lepperton, has received advice that his son Trooper A. Cartwright, is returning from the front by the H.M.T. Cordoba, which is due to arrive in Wellington about August 30th. The Rev. D. Hird, of Rotorua, has accepted a unanimous call to the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church at Opotiki. The. Presbytery of Waikato, in sustaining the call, expressed regret at the departure of Mr. Hird. Sister Affleck, of Opnnake, and formerly on the New Plymouth Hospital staif, is return!-g to New Zealand by the Athenic, due in Wellington about September 1. At Kaponga on Wednesday evening, the local orchestra tendered a complimentary banquet to their flute soloist, Mr. T; Brotheridge, on the occasion of his departure for New Plymouth.

The death is announced from London of Mr. W. W. Skilbeck, editor of the "Nineteenth Century and After," since 1908, at the age of fifty-live years. Mr. Skilbeck was private secretary to his father-in-law, Sir James Knowles, founder and editor of the "Nineteenth Century," from 1893 till the death of the latter, in 1908. He was educated for the law, being called to the Bar of the Inner Temple in 1898. ; The death occurred at New Plymouth hospital yesterday, after a short illness, of Mr. Charles Stanley Stronge, an old settler of the Opunake district. Deceased, who had been farming in the Oaonui district for over 30 years, went into retirement ill Opunako a few years ago. He took a keen interest in local matters and was for some years a director of the Oaonui factory and a member of theParihaka Eoad Board. He is survived by a widow and family of two sons, Messrs C. B. Stronge and J. G. Stronge,' Oaonni, and three (laughters, Mrs. W. Swain (Te Awamutu), Mrs. G, Feaver (Opunake), and Miss Stronge. The funeral will take place at Opunake to-morrow.
