THE ARAPAWA. (Prom Our Own Correspondent,) August 14. The attempts to refloat the s.s. Arapawa yesterday and last night were unsuccessful, and 1 understand a cradle will have to be built in which to work her down the,beach to where she will float. A scoop was used yesterday afternoon to remove some of the sand from around her, hut it did not enable them to get her off. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, at which there were present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Gribbon, Jones, Ogle, Blair, Rennie, Beckbcssinger, and T. Buchanan. After some discussion as to the advisability of sending a delegate to Wellington to urge the Government to vigorously push on with the metalling between here and Te Kuiti, it was reI solved that the Mayor represent the Council at the conference to he held in Wellington. Mr. C. E. Collins wrote complaining of cattle-straying on. the roads, but nothing was done in the matter. A letter from the New Zealand Automobile ' Union, recommending that the approaches to bridges be painted white, was received, and as the only bridge in the borough has white approaches no further action was takpi. A letter from the Taranaki Counties Conference, recommending that the Dominion Conference vigorously urge upon Vhc Government the necessity of increasing the present subsidy to local bodies to 10s in the £ on all general rates collected, and that as a means of providing the necessary funds the Government be asked to sufficiently increase the existing motor tax and existing totalisator tax. The Mayor was asked to support the remit re tyres. After some discission it, was moved by the Mayor, and seconded by Cr. GTib\Jron, that application be made to the New Plvmouth Harbor Board for the seryiccs of a diver ..nd plant to inspect the piles of the bridge. An amendment was fnoved that no further action be taken in regard to the bridge. The amendment was earned.
