(By Wire.—Special to Dally News ) Chrlstcliurch, Last Night. , It Is an open question whether the ■ lack of trains made a very great difference 'to the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting, which opened to-day under good auspices. Tie attendance probably was aot qultfc up to the best, the totallsator handling £55,832 10s, as against £60,401 on the flrst of last year's two days. The course was In fine order, and the racing was good, especially in respect of tho Jumping. The T»lly-Ho plate provided a poor opening tace, two, of the four starters being soon out of It, Toofan refusing repeatedly at the Srst fence, and Sit Cylinder falling at the top of the Straight. Sandown, who was a good favourite, raced with The Grand for half the distance, but the latter then drew away and won easily. Tip Up and Signature set a hot pace !n the Ttljl Hurdles, but when half the journey had been covered Reformation headed them, and Signature went on with him, while .Master MoiiUia mdved up. : Rounding the turn the latter was In front, as they jumped tho In fit hurdle, and went on to win comfortably, Paraoa finishing very fast, and heating Signature for second money. Wild Pilgrim Was crowded In the bunch and fell at tho Srst hurdle. Reformation waa a slightly better favourite than Signature. The Jumpers' Flat Race Was little more than an exercise gallop for Cynic, who was a hot fuvourlto. Ho could hot go the pace set by. Qanag Awe' In the early part, but the Imported horse was In a handy position as they turned Into the straight, and won' easily from Art and Sir Solo, who. may do better when tbero are hurdles to jump.

For the brand Notional Steeplechase, ten of the twelve acceptors started, and gave one of the best exhibitions of jumping seen at Itlcctrton for some years. Morecambe and Lochellai made the early running, but after going two Biles Lochqlia drew During the last mile, Master Lupin was always in second placf, but could never get near Lochella, who had a very easy win. Master Strowan just bent Bon Reve for third place, and Merry Lad, Vascular, and Dardanelles finished at Intervals. Morecaifibe was pulled oft at the Kennels double the last time, Polihogue fell at the same spot the first time, and Waimai came, to grief at the last brush fence Lochella ttas a good favourite. He won a steeplechase at Wellington, but tills was his first appearance In good company. He had been doing great schooling work at Rlccarton. From a time point of view It nan a great performance, beatjng "Eelnlr's record. The Hunters' Hurdle Race was won easily by Bed Cent, who led all the way. Sonny, win Was a good favourite, was catching him at the last hurdle but one, but bumped his rider otf. Day Light finished on well, and s>o did John Jtellly, but nothing had a chance with the winner.

The Enfield Steeplechase was a four-horse race, and a very poor onp, Mannwapanca i"idInglhll the way from Ban Sebastian, anil winning very easily. This pair monopolized tlio belting, the winner belmr a good favourite. The Winter Cup provided a fino race. Itetiekah, a good favourite, was first out, and was Joined by Cerberus, this pair showing the way to the straight, with Kliboyne heading the rest. Before the distance was reached, Gold, Kip shot out, and a little further on Cazlque put in a claim. A great finish rcBulted In a narrow win for the latter Rebekab, two lengths away, just heat Cerberus, and next In order came Hlero, Form Tip, Kliboyne, and Potentiality. Leaping Burn was lert . ill the post, and Kllkee and Borodino lost a doaen lengths. The merit of the winner's performance Is emphasised by the fact that a bigger weight than his 10 11 lias only twice been carried to victory, Vladimir and Kremlia having each carried a pound more. The Avonhead Handicap resulted In BrackenHeld winning comfortably from the favourite, Tamcroa Tho latter was quickest out, but ftrackenfleid was in front after they had gone two furlongs, r.nd never gave anything a chdtace. Black Mountain finished fast In third place, Just beating Imarlbbon. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAT. Christchurch, Last Night. The handicaps for the second day are as follows:
