PATRIOTIC WAR FUNDS. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 12. With respect to the demand by tbo Returned Soldiers' Association for a Royal Commission to inquire into the whole question of patriotic war funds, it appears frpm the correspondence published that the Y.M.C.A. is tho body to whose accounts the Minister's attention was drawn by the association. The Y.M.CJL says it courts the fullrest inquiry. Owing to the ramifications of its work in various countries tho task of preparing the balance-sheet is necessarily lengthy, but Government auditors have now completed the work and the figures will shortly be available. The Returned Soldiers' Association is still urging the Minister to comply with its request. WHAKATANE ITEMS. Whakatane, Aug. 12. There were three outbreaks of typhoid at Ruatoki, Paraoa, and Whnnepanea, where over twenty cases occurred among the natives. A temporary hospital at Ruatoki has been closed. Those at the other two places will close a fortnight hence. The Whakatane Rugby Union discussed a protest by returned soldiers and others against playing Dalmatians. It was finally resolved that Dalmatians, be debarred from playing in the senior grade competition. WAITAKI SCHOOL MEMORIAL. Oamaru, Aug. 12. The Waitaki High School Board will contribute £IOOO towards the Cost of the memorial hall for the boys' school, to commemorate the memory of. the old bovs who gave their lives in the contribution to be subject to" the approval of Ministers. It is contemplated to raise £IO,OOO for the purpose, towards which the staff and pupils nave already undertaken to provide £IOOO. FIRE IN A MINE. Dunedin, Last Night. The management of the New Zealand Coal and Oil Company states that the fire which occurred in No. 2 Mine at Kaitangata on Saturday was confined to a portion of the mine. The part affected consisted of old workings, which were nearly exhausted. This part has been sealed off permanently, and the mine is working as usual to-day. The output of coal will not be affected, the men being transferred to other sections of the mine DEFENCE PROPOSALS CONDEMNED. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington Presbytery to-night carried a resolution condenjrlmg th© Defence Minister's proposal to extend the Defence system by training the youth of the country for four months in camp. A GENEROUS OFFER. Christchurch, ( August 11. At ft special meeting of subscribers to the Children's Convalescent Cottage at New Brighton, an offer rectived from Mr. H. Cholmondeley of six acres of land at Governor's Bay and £4m to erect a cottage home was accepted. The home at New Brighton is to be closed and the funds used for .the same purpose in the institution at Governor's Bay.
